Make the comparison about your situation

The local facts stay the same. These are the pressure points and questions that matter more for this decision.

Pressure points to model

  • No employer benefits
  • COBRA is expensive
  • Irregular income
  • Covering a spouse or family

Questions worth answering

  • What do independent contractors usually need to compare?
  • What should I consider before leaving employer coverage?
  • How do I compare COBRA with other healthcare approaches?
  • What should a contractor with a family model before choosing?

How SakeOf helps

  • Use SakeOf as one option in a broader comparison, not as a guaranteed replacement
  • Model your actual household before making a decision
  • Review the Membership Handbook for current sharing guidelines and limitations

Model the move away from employer benefits

  • What did your employer used to contribute?
  • What will you pay on your own each month?
  • Do you need to cover a spouse or family too?

Contractor income can move around. Compare the monthly cost and the amount you could be responsible for when care happens.

How members use SakeOf in real life

Local facts are one part of the decision. These stories show what it looks like after joining.

Start with the care you need

SakeOf is a healthcare membership built to give members a more guided, member-directed way to navigate care. Start with the kind of help you need—an everyday concern, a prescription, ongoing primary care, an in-person service or help understanding a bill. Then check which options are selected and active and choose a provider when care calls for an in-person visit.

The practical advantage is having tools for different points in the process: everyday-care options, provider choice, bill review and support for eligible larger medical needs. Eligibility and program terms apply. Use the calculator, Savings Guide, provider search or Jordan to explore options and plan what to ask before care.

Use everyday-care options when they fit

Zero Copay Telemedicine, when selected and active, is designed for common, non-emergency illnesses and symptoms appropriate for virtual care. A clinician determines whether virtual care is appropriate. Prescriptions may be issued when clinically appropriate and legally permitted, but prescription costs follow the active Rx program. Emergency care, labs, imaging, specialist care, procedures and in-person follow-up are separate services; a virtual recommendation does not include them.

Rx and Prescription Benefits are designed primarily for medications commonly prescribed for acute conditions. A medication on the current formulary may be available at $0 when the participating-pharmacy process and prescribing and dispensing requirements are met. Check the current pharmacy tool before filling a prescription. Formulary and vendor rules can change, and non-formulary, chronic-maintenance, specialty and other medications may have a separate cost unless another active program expressly provides for them.

Mental Health and Counseling is an optional path to counseling when selected, active and eligible. The counseling option does not itself establish eligibility for every behavioral-health service or medication cost. Virtual Primary Care is a separate optional feature: it offers a dedicated physician relationship, virtual follow-up, an annual virtual wellness visit and chronic-care or medication-management support when appropriate for virtual care. It has a $15 monthly adjustment, and its required bundled options must remain active.

Choose local in-person care when needed

When you need a test, specialist or other in-person service, you can choose a provider and confirm the details directly. UH Aurora Health Center in Aurora lists primary care, laboratory services, digestive health, endocrinology, OB/GYN and podiatry, as well as in-person and virtual visits. The listing does not establish that a particular clinician, service or appointment is currently available.

Call the center at 330-954-7200 or UH scheduling at 1-866-UH4-CARE to ask about the specific service, appointment availability, participation and expected charges. UH links to price-estimate and price-transparency resources; an estimate depends on the service and patient details. Before scheduled care, ask what will be performed, whether additional services may be billed separately and how to request an estimate. For planned higher-cost care, contact SakeOf in advance when reasonably possible.

Get support understanding a bill

SakeOf’s Full Service support includes review of eligibility, medical necessity, documentation and price fairness. SakeOf may negotiate or reprice a medical bill. Keep the itemized bill and related records so you can respond if additional information is requested.

An itemized bill is required for submissions and should include service dates, provider information and CPT or HCPCS codes when available. SakeOf may also request clinical notes, medical records, diagnosis or procedure details, provider documentation, billing records or a signed medical-record release. Submit complete documents within six months of the service date. Submit balance bills, denials or payment demands within 10 days of receiving them.

Understand support for eligible larger needs

For larger eligible medical events, SakeOf reviews the event and its bills under program rules. The applicable member commitment or feature-specific responsibility is part of the member’s responsibility; the amount and process depend on the event and membership terms. Voluntary community funding may be invited for eligible larger events, but it is not guaranteed.

Members are responsible for keeping membership active, maintaining a valid payment method, funding required asks and submitting requested documents promptly. An expense paid or discounted through an optional feature cannot be counted again as a separate sharing request for the same charge unless SakeOf expressly approves an eligible remaining balance. When reasonably possible, contact SakeOf in advance about planned higher-cost care.

Match optional features to your plans

Optional features let members consider additional services according to their needs. Maternity Care has an $18 monthly adjustment. Pregnancy must begin after the continuous 12-month maternity waiting period is completed, and program limits and other maternity rules apply. Dental and Vision Discounts, Chiropractic and Acupuncture, and Durable Medical Equipment are also optional features, each with its own adjustment and program terms.

Physical and Occupational Therapy has an $11 monthly adjustment. When selected and eligible, the feature has a shared 12-visit limit and $780 annual maximum across enrolled members. Eligible visits use a $35 feature-specific member responsibility instead of the standard $500 event commitment; an order, referral or plan of care may be required. Check your membership options and terms when comparing features.
